What is Fastag & How does it work?
What's inside?
Standing in long queues at toll plazas is a thing of the past. Thanks to FASTag, paying toll tax while driving on national highways in India is now automatic, cashless, and seamless. Whether you’re a frequent highway commuter or an occasional traveler, having a FASTag on your vehicle is mandatory and highly convenient.
What is FASTag?
FASTag is a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)-based sticker affixed on the front windscreen of your vehicle. It allows for automatic deduction of toll charges without requiring you to stop at toll booths.
Key Features of FASTag:
- Linked to a prepaid wallet or bank account
- Works at all National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) toll plazas
- Helps reduce fuel consumption and traffic congestion
- Mandatory for all vehicles under Indian government rules
How Does FASTag Work?
FASTag operates using RFID technology, which enables real-time toll collection.
- The FASTag is affixed to the inside of your vehicle’s front windscreen.
- As you approach a toll plaza, an RFID reader scans your tag from a distance.
- The toll amount is automatically deducted from your linked prepaid account.
- A confirmation SMS is sent to your registered mobile number.
- You can view the transaction history and balance using your FASTag account or mobile app.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Is FASTag mandatory?
Yes. As of February 2021, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has made FASTag mandatory for all four-wheelers.

Your tag will not work at the toll booth. Recharge it instantly via UPI or mobile banking apps to continue smooth travel.
How long is FASTag valid?
The RFID tag is valid for 5 years. You only need to recharge the balance periodically.
Can I transfer FASTag to a new vehicle?
