Types of Bank Holidays in India

Bank holidays in India can be broadly categorized into different types based on their significance and applicability. Understanding these categories helps individuals and businesses plan their banking activities accordingly.

1. National Holidays

National holidays are the most important bank holidays as they are observed across the entire country. Banks remain closed on these days, and most businesses and government offices also cease operations. The three major national holidays in India are:

  • Republic Day (January 26)
  • Independence Day (August 15)
  • Gandhi Jayanti (October 2)

2. Public or Government Holidays

These holidays are declared by the central or state governments and may vary based on regional importance. Public holidays include festivals, state foundation days, and events of historical significance. Some common public holidays include:

  • Diwali (celebrated across multiple states)
  • Holi (primarily in North India)
  • Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha (observed by the Muslim community)
  • Christmas (celebrated by the Christian community)
  • State-specific Holidays like Raja Sankranti in Odisha or Pongal in Tamil Nadu

3. Weekend Holidays (Sundays & Second/Fourth Saturdays)

In India, banks follow a five-day or six-day work schedule depending on the type of bank. As per the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) regulations:

  • All banks remain closed on Sundays.
  • Banks also remain closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month.
  • However, the first and third Saturdays are normal working days unless they coincide with a public holiday.

4. Religious and Cultural Holidays

India is known for its diversity, and many bank holidays are dedicated to religious and cultural festivals. These holidays vary from state to state based on the dominant communities. Some important ones include:

  • Mahashivratri
  • Guru Nanak Jayanti
  • Onam (festival in Kerala)

5. Regional and State-Specific Holidays

Each state in India has its own unique festivals and historical days, which are recognized as bank holidays. These holidays do not apply to all states but are significant for the local population. Examples include:

  • Bihu in Assam
  • Ugadi in Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh
  • Chhath Puja in Bihar and Jharkhand
  • Goa Liberation Day in Goa

Bank Holidays on 2nd & 4th Saturday

As per RBI rules, banks in India remain closed on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of every month. If a festival or public holiday also falls on these days, banks remain closed accordingly. It’s always good to check the holiday calendar before planning any bank-related work.
